The LG Optimus G.

Cutting edge?

You better believe it.

I had the opportunity from the great folks over at TELUS to review this phone and tell you all about it. If you know me, I love technology and I love phones especially. My first phone EVER was the Sanyo Clearnet phone from TELUS back in 2000 and we’ve come a LOOONG way. Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed with phones and am always up on the latest. My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S3 which is pretty amazing too.

I’ve been using the Optimus G for the last two weeks and let’s put it this way, I’m going to have to find a new home for my Samsung Galaxy S3 and not for the reasons you think. It simply works so much better for me and I truly did fall in love.

Why?

First off, let’s start with the 1.5GHz quad-core chip, inside this super phone. That’s about as cutting edge as it gets right now and when you consider the 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 GPU–can we say lightening fast? I was simply amazed at the speed and how fast it loads and how dramatically crashing  or lag of any sort is reduced almost to nil.

It’s snappy and the 1280×768 True IPS+ display is the best that I have seen thus far and on the market right now. It’s sharp and it displays colors incredibly realistically. It significantly reduces reflections by minimizing the gap between the glass and the LCD display itself. This makes for a gorgeous display with vibrant colors and visible clarity.

Need to take notes?

Quick Memo has got to be THE coolest feature I’ve seen. It can be activated via the quick settings row at the top of the notification bar, allows you to annotate screenshots or use your finger to trace basic notes and sketches and save it to your phone. It’s ridiculously COOL. Pictured above is my attempt to show you a screenshot that was taken using Quick Memo and shared directly from my Optimus G.

Texting?

No problem. I’m a texting fiend and what I love about the LG Optimus G is that when I receive a text, it doesn’t take me out of my browser or app that I am using at the time I receive the text. Rather it comes up and gives me the option to view it and write back right then and there or just closing it and continue browsing or whatever it was I was doing.

Phenomenal.

The keyboard is much easier to use in comparison to other phones, I also find that the square shape of the phone rests much nicer in my hands for much easier typing. I find that with the S3 it fit awkwardly in my hand and would use Swiftkey. Not with the Optimus G that makes for easy typing.

Customizable.

It also has NFC which allows you to share files simply by touching devices, I’m glad that it has this feature because it was what I liked about the S3. It also works with Miracast which means that with an appropriate dongle connected to one’s television, the phone’s screen and sound can be mirrored in real time a la AirPlay.

I also like how it allows you to place your apps and widgets and how customizable it is. By pressing down and holding onto an app or folder, you can actually edit the logo or symbol of the app with ones that LG offers or ones that you have from your own gallery. The folders can be chosen by color and if you want you can change the icon of your alarm clock or any icon on the phone.

LG provides its own suite of their own apps, that includes a basic video editor, office software, NFC tag reader, cloud backup service, file manager and much more. I find that some apps that come preloaded with phones are most times not useful and there are no way to delete them but, these LG apps are actually quite useful and worth keeping in my books.

  • Make it easy on your eyes viewing vivid lifelike images in true colours without distortion on the stunning 4.7” True HD IPS PLUS touchscreen display.
  • Take smarter photos using voice command, shoot videos and pictures simultaneously, get better night shots and capture all the action without blur using the 8-megapixel camera.
  • Stay powered up on the go with the 2100 mAh high density battery and a high efficiency processor that optimizes power consumption.
  • Stream and download videos, play games, and browse the web with lightning fast 4G LTE data speeds.
  • Easily write or type onscreen notes using the customizable ergonomically advanced keypad.
  • Multitask with ease — like texting while watching a video — on dual display screens.
  • Stay protected against bumps, scratches and other daily wear and tear with the Gorilla glass 2 screen.
  • HD Voice for crisper voice clarity and minimized background noise.

Battery life.

Another thing that I am truly appreciating is the battery life. With the Optimus G I am able to use my phone all day and sometimes not have it die until the next day. So one charge can go a very long day. For me, this is a life saver because I use my phone for absolutely EVERYTHING.  Whether it’s updating this site, my social media, answering emails and personal uses as well.  The only draw back I would say is that it doesn’t have expandable memory but, comes with a beefy 32GB of memory.

It doesn’t have a removable battery so, for those of you who prefer that option the G does not offer it. But, I find the phone is lasting between 10-15 hours with maybe one quick pick-me up charge before I’m leaving the house. Which is a remarkable battery life in comparison to the  S3 that I own and the Razr that I owned briefly. Considering that it has a dual core processor which you’d imagine would drain battery life, I give it an A+ for the length of battery use.

Taking Pictures.

Another AWESOME feature is the way it allows you to take pictures, you can take pictures simply by holding your phone in camera mode and saying “CHEESE” and it snaps a pic. Or when you are shooting video or playing it video, you can blur the real-time playing and access notes or other apps at the same time. The 8 MP camera is stunning too and it takes amazing pictures. LG’s “Cheese Shutter” allows you to use words such as “cheese,” “whiskey,” “smile”, “kimchi,”  and “LG”  to initiate the shutter to take your pics.

You can also use the LG Time Catch Shot which takes several pictures before the shutter actually initiates. The quality is not the best but the feature is pretty sweet to have if you don’t want to miss a second.

LG Optimus G TELUS

Features Galore.

Since I love my gadgets, the LG Optimus G is going to be my go-to phone and my other phone is my back-up. I can’t get enough of this phone and with each day, I’m finding the ease of use and finding new ways to use the many features that the Optimus G offers.

I would definitely recommend this phone if you want THE best that is out when it comes to super phones. You can have the speed of a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core processor and a 4G LTE network capability behind you and right in the palm of your hand.

I have to admit that there is no way I would give up my iPhone. However, I do love LG products and if the iPhone was no more I would absolutely take a look at an LG phone. Sounds like it has some pretty cool features.

  4. Wow! So many great features for such a sleek device. Great review too by the way! Very informative.
