Segway with Go Tours Canada!

Toronto is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s bustling, always so live and rich in history. The Distillery District is one of those places and you can completely immerse yourself in its past, present and what is to come. Spending an afternoon or evening touring the district is a must but, it’s what better way to see it than via Segway?

I recently visited Toronto for a media event and for a couples road trip getaway in the GTA and Niagara Region. One of our favorite places is the Distillery District because Mill St. and so much more. Thanks to Go Tours Canada, we were able to take in the district in a completely different way.

Go Tours Canada offers the unique experience of riding through the historical Distillery District on Segway but, they also offer walking tours. Their Booze, Death and Cholera tour will take you through the streets of the District with stops at Mill St. and SOMA for tastings. There are three more tours available, all which will take you through the district and on the way, you will learn its history and drink and eat your way through too. See all the working tours, here.

The Segway Distillery District tours vary in time and there is also a ghost tour! Other Segway Tours are available at different locations. You can zip your way around the Toronto Zoo, go off-road at Horseshoe Resort or Segway at Hardwood Ski and Bike. Both which are picturesque!

Get Ready!

If you’ve never ridden a Segway, you don’t have to worry. The Go Tours team are super helpful and supportive and you won’t start the tour until you are comfortable. We decided to book the 60 minute tour + training. I was actually quite shocked at how easy it was to navigate and use the Segway. Our guide Will was so awesome, while I’ve used a Segway once before, Darasak and I were both a bit nervous. He helped us get comfortable and in no time, helmets on–we were off.

Take In the History!

We set off and it was incredible to zip through the district, Will began to tell us about the history behind the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery. I may not have been able to do any tricks with the Segway but, I did catch a little speed and it was incredible. If you are heading down with the family or if you are a bit anxious, the governor on the Segway will only allow you to go 10 km/hour and since the Distillery District is pedestrian-only, so no cars or traffic to get in the way.

More Details!
Who can ride?

All riders need to be 12 years and up and weigh between 100-280 lbs, if you’re a minor (under 18)–you’ll have to ride with a guardian or parent.

Is it hard to ride?

It is a lot easier than you think. At first, I was scared but, in no time–I was able to feel comfortable. Go Tours will give you safety training. Most people pass it in 3-5 minutes and if for some reason you don’t pass–you will get refunded. The Go Tours team is a great bunch and they always have safety in mind.

What happens if it rains?

Tours will run in light-mid rain but, serious weather conditions will stop tours. Safety first! We happened to have rain in the forecast when our tour was scheduled. I received a call from Go Tours and they gave me the option to reschedule or come in a little bit earlier. We went in earlier and avoided the rain and had a great tour!

Chocolate? Yes, Please!

Will our guide was really awesome, he was flexible and he answered all my geeky history questions. We did a few rounds on the Segway and we ventured to SOMA to taste some chocolate. It was delicious and included with the tour, you can get a taste of chocolate. Now, when you are at the Distillery District, you have to try the spicy hot chocolate! You won’t regret it–it’s a must!

Mill St. Brewery!

Just before our tour, we explored the Distillery District on foot and we stopped at the Mill St. Brewery restaurant for lunch. Nothing like having spicy wings with a beer! We shared fries and enjoyed a Mill St. Organic beer, our favorite. The restaurant is unique, you can see all the equipment and we were actually seated by the bar with our backs to the pipes and brewing equipment.

During our 60-minute tour, we stopped by Mill St. Brewery and we had 4 samples of their beer. This is such a cool stop if you’ve never tried their beer. You also have the opportunity to pick up the beer you try or pick up unique brews that aren’t available in stores.

Take In the Art!

One of the best parts of the Distillery District is that not only is it rich in history, food and brew–it’s rich in art and culture as well. You’ll find one-of-a-kind stores, shops, galleries, studios, restaurants, cafes, theatres and more. We especially loved the art and we loved the antique store. So many amazing items in one place! I can’t wait to go back!
