The Best Buy Smart Home.
Smart home technology is slowly playing a bigger role in making our homes more secure and functional. Designers are not only incorporating smart tech into their designs but they are using it to enhance their designs. No matter how big or small the project, smart technology can make your home work for you.
The custom-built Best Buy Smart Home at the National Home Show showcases how you can beautifully and functionally integrate smart home technology into your living space.
From smart lighting and thermostats to security cameras, video doorbells and connected appliances, you’ll get to see and experience the latest innovation from top brands like Nest, Philips Hue, Ring, Samsung, Bosch and more!
Last week, I had the chance to attend the National Home Show in Toronto on opening day and to check out the Best Buy Smart Home. I was excited to see the latest in technology because, in the last couple of years, I’ve been making my home smarter.
Best Buy has partnered with Christine Dovey, published stylist, decorator, and artist, to design their mock home at the show. I had the opportunity to walk through the Best Buy Smart home with her and she explained how she merged her love of design with the aesthetic and practicality of smart tech. She’s offered tips on how you can do it too!
Streamline the Design of Your Home.
One of the best ways to do this is to choose technology that works, creates an impact but, doesn’t take up a whole lot of space. Choosing pieces of tech that look like modern sculpture can enhance the design of a room by adding a notably modern and clean-lined feel to any room.
Tech to Choose:
Samsung 65″ KS9000 4K SUHD TV
This TV is gorgeous and as flat as you can imagine. It has Quantum Dot Nano Crystal technology produces images in lifelike colour, while the Supreme MotionvRate 240 creates smooth, seamless video. Dovey mentioned that usually she likes to tuck away big screens inside a cabinet but, this one is a showpiece that becomes a focal point in any room. Not only does it work amazingly, it adds to the design of your home.
RING Video Door Bell Pro
I fell in love with the system, I have something similar in my home but, this is one item that I am picking up and incorporating into my home. You’ll never have to worry about missing a package again or having to open the door to people you may not know.
When someone rings the doorbell, you’ll know who’s knocking. The Wi-Fi-enabled Pro features Full HD 1080p video so you can see who’s at your door with clarity and detail. Plus, with motion detection, it will keep you informed of any activity in front of your home.
Samsung Radiant 360 R7 Audio Bluetooth Wireless Speaker
The speaker not only has clear sound, it becomes a part of your decor. Dovey mentioned that pieces of tech like speakers are now coming to the forefront and we are placing them on their own tables right in the centre. This wireless speaker uses Ring Radiator audio technology to deliver sound evenly throughout your room so there are no dead spots. Not to mention, doesn’t it look fabulous too?
Invest in Appliances That Make Life Easier!
Now, this is where I was blown away at the National Home Show. The appliances Best Buy have on display are mind-blowing. Appliances are usually where I don’t have an issue making an investment since they will be used regularly. You can get the biggest bang for your buck by investing in high-tech appliances that work for you.
The Family Hub Fridge:
This fridge was my absolute favourite at the Home Show because not only does it provide entertainment with its touch screen capability, TV mirroring and radio, it takes a picture of the inside of your fridge every 8 seconds and you can access it remotely.
You can set expiration dates on your food items and you’ll always know what you have and don’t have. The fridge will generate your shopping list and you can order your groceries from the fridge too.
The Family Hub eliminates the need for a command centre as it becomes a digital command center that everyone can access. It has 1 dedicated fridge, a dedicated freezer and another that can be converted to either a fridge or freezer.
Dovey explained that one of the Best Buy Smart Home kitchens she designed was inspired by the kitchens of Europe where they have everything in one area. That means bringing the washer and dryer into the kitchen.
The Samsung 5.2 Washer and Dryer provides professional quality from the comfort of your home and having them where you can have immediate access is a plus. It also eliminates the need for a laundry room.
The Bosch 800 Series 24″ Built-In Coffee System
Have you ever wanted your very own barista who can make you your cup of java whenever you want it? The Bosch 800 series 24″ built-in coffee system can brew frothy cappuccinos, creamy lattes, bold espressos, and more at a touch of a button.
So, you can be laying in bed and you can control the coffee maker anywhere in your home through the Home Connect app. How cool is that? I’ll take a cappuccino, please!
Have Fun & Enjoy Technology!
Tech isn’t always about advancing and making our lives easier. It does do that but, people often forget that you can have a lot of fun with it too.
There are various toys that are not only fun but, educational for all ages. When you visit the Best Buy Smart Home, you’ll get to play around with so many fun toys. You can find BB-8 from Star Wars and Sphero coding toys too. There are so many fun toys and gadgets that you can choose from. I’ve listed a couple below.
I have heard the hype and now I know it is well-founded. It is such a cool toy. The more love you give it, the smarter it gets and it literally hatches out of an egg. What is left behind is a lifelike egg shell.
WowWee CHiP Robotic Dog
CHiP the robot pup is an intelligent and affectionate companion that responds to your behavior using advanced sensors and smart accessories. Thanks to the included smart band and smart ball, CHiP does things like follow you and play catch.
Nanoleaf Aurora Smart LED Light Panel!
Now this combines fun and decor and I cannot wait to add it to my kids’ rooms. The Nanoleaf LED light panels combine light, colour, and creativity to create the perfect ambiance.
It comes in a 9-pack and the panels can be applied to your wall in a design that you choose. Best of all, you can choose from millions of colours and create custom scenes to brighten up your living space in imaginative ways. All this, through an app!
This is another piece of tech that I am waiting for! It’s a digital canvas that has over 20,000 images of artwork and photography pre-loaded and that you can change by a wave of a hand. You can also get the information of each art piece right on the screen. The artwork is so realistic and looks like an actual canvas. If you don’t want to use the pre-loaded ones, you can download more or use your own images.
