Simple Self-Care Ideas

Let’s start off by saying, self-care is not selfish.

Give yourself permission to pause. Life, in general, can be hectic and even more so in times of uncertainty.

I’ve always been a huge believer that you will not get anywhere on an empty tank. So, even in the times of social and physical distancing, it is of utmost importance to take care of yourself.

If you’re a parent, you might have new roles to play. Entertainer, teacher, and referee as you try to wrangle your kids and maintain normalcy.

1. Take Alone Time

Let’s be real. If you’re a parent this is difficult. If you have a partner, they can help with the load but, you find yourself solo-parenting, do not feel guilty.

Even if it takes you grabbing an iPad or letting them watch a TV show to get some time to regroup mentally, do it.

This is one that I often find difficult but one that I am making more time for. When life is stressful, we need to step away from stressors, and just take a breather.

Whether it’s grabbing a tea or coffee (or wine) and sneaking off for a bit. Maybe it’s listening to your favourite music and zoning out or a small meditation session.

I can’t stress this enough, take some time to regroup if you need it.

2. Pamper Yourself

Whether you take showers or baths, make sure to take some extra time to relax. Whether it’s taking 45 minutes on your skincare routine or soaking in the tub until you are pruny.

Light a candle, put your favourite music on and get your pampering on. Both men and women can do this, so enjoy it!

Put on some makeup or don’t.

Do what makes you happy!

3. Start a Skin Care Routine

If your skincare game has been lacking, here is your chance to kick it up a notch. Find the perfect cleanser for yourself and start there.

You can always order some great products online, try a Sonicsmooth and dermaplane, or go the natural route with a natural facial.

It’s worth mentioning that you should also create a dental care routine.

This should include brushing and flossing regularly, visiting the dentist every 6 months, and even getting dental implants in Naples to replace missing teeth if needed.

4. Stay Hydrated

I know it doesn’t scream self-care and water tastes, well, like nothing. The thing is, that it will make you feel better.

You can always add mint, fruit, or cucumbers! My faves are raspberries and mint.

Just keep your fave bottle (I love my Hydroflask) full and nearby!

5. Get Your Heart Rate Up

I know it may seem like the opposite of relaxation but, exercise releases endorphins. Which in turn, makes you feel great!

The best part is that you don’t need a gym to get your heart rate up. You can choose a video on YouTube and get your sweat on.

Now that we are spending a bit more time inside, it’s a good idea to move. It doesn’t have to be a workout video either.

You can just put on some music and have a dance party. Good for your body and your soul.

6. Cuddle Up with Your Pets

There is something special about snuggling up to your fur friend. They just seem to know exactly what you need.

At the time of posting and with the current events, I’m sure your pets are happy to have you home. Love on them!

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Times are tough for everyone. Don’t be afraid to ask for a little help. Whether it’s to make meals (order takeout) or for time to yourself.

Even just reach out to a friend for an ear to listen.

8. Indulge a Little

Life is all about enjoying the little things. Personally, I love to bake. It’s a fun activity and it calms me down.

The labour of your work is delicious too!

But, life is too short to not have the cake, bake the cookies, or have that chocolate.

After all, it’s all about balance.

So, lose the guilt and enjoy it.

9. Get Enough Sleep

You should be getting at least 8 hours a day. I know that as a busy person, that can be hard to do sometimes.

Turn off your devices at least an hour before you go to bed. Grab a book and relax.

In fact, take a nap if you need it during the day.

10. Make a Gratitude List

I think it’s always good to take some time to count our blessings. Especially when life gets hard.

Maybe writing them down will help you realize that even life gets tough, there are still things to be grateful for.

I know many are facing loss and distance. Writing down positive things can keep your mind positive.

Remember in the time of social distancing, we can still help each other out. We do need to stay emotionally connected though.

I’ve added a checklist to reference and a few more tips!

Take Care of Yourself

I hope this can inspire you to take care of yourself. Before we can be of service to anyone, we need to take care of ourselves.

Even if we aren’t taking care of anyone else, we need to love ourselves enough to practice self-care.
