Pokémon Felt Pikachu Craft for Kids

Pokémon was a huge part of my youth growing up. Especially a character as classic as Pikachu. With Detective Pikachu in theatres everywhere, we decided why not pay homage to one of the cutest Pokémon? There’s just something about the way he says, “Pika, pika,” that makes us all simultaneously say, “Awww”, right?

He is Ash’s best friend and loyal companion and now, he can be yours too. This craft is perfect for Pokémon Birthday Parties, school crafts, and great for rainy day crafts!

Read on for the full step-by-step guide to making your very own Pikachu, give him a hat and he’ll turn into Detective Pikachu!

A picture of supplies needed to make a felt Pikachu: scissors, pen, felt in yellow, red, white, and black, and a needle and thread.

Things You Will Need:

All felt pieces are cut out by using the template.

Step 1:

Select yellow, red and black felt for this project. Trace the patterns, from the provided TEMPLATE, on the selected felt fabrics. Cut out the traced felt fabrics using scissors. The template includes- 2 main body parts, 2 parts for the tail, 2 circles for the cheeks, 2 circles for the eyes, 2 ears and 2 top parts of the ears, 2 hand patterns.

Eyes have been sewn on to top half of Pikachu body, a little nose is stitched on.

Step 2:

Take any one of the main body parts and stitch the eye cut outs on it. Also, use black thread to stitch the nose and mouth of Pikachu.

Cheeks, mouth, nose, and eyes have been sewn on. Next is ears and tail.

Step 3:

Stitch the 2 tail cut-outs together around the sides. Then proceed to stitch the top parts of the ears on each cutout. Finish by stitching the 2 red blush patterns on both cheeks. And then, stitch the 2 hand patterns on 2 sides of the body, below the head part.

Ears are being sewn on and tail onto back half of Pikachu felt.

Step 4:

Take the other (plain body) main body pattern and place it on a flat surface. Place the tail and the ears on their appropriate places by slightly overlapping them with the body cut out.

Top half of Pikachu is about to be sewn onto the back half before being stuffed.

Step 5:

Now place the stitched body pattern over the plain one. Prepare needle and thread.

Needle is shown sewing on ears.

Step 6:

Start to stitch around the sides to join the 2 body parts. While stitching the sides make sure to stitch the tail and the ears along as well.

After both sides, ears, and tail are stitched on, a small space is left and is stuffed with cut up felt pieces.

Step 7:

Keep a small opening before stitching all around. Stuff the Pikachu felt plush with cotton or small felt cut-outs (leftover felts). Insert enough stuffing to give the plush a fluffy look. Do not stuff too much.

After you've stuffed Pikachu, it's time to seal him up.

Step 8:

Once the stuffing is complete, stitch the open end to secure the stuffing. Tie 2 knots and randomly insert the needle into the plush and drawing it out from the back side of the plush. Cut off extra thread.
