Earth Hour 2013.

It’s a call to action, a chance for you to take a stand and fight against climate change. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, you CAN make a difference!

On Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 from 8:30 PM- 9:30 PM, WWF is asking you to join them in this fight. Canadians are witnessing devastating effects of climate change in this country and around the world. WWF believes renewable energy can be Canada’s source of power for the next generation. Their goal is for Canada to rely on 100% renewable energy by 2050.

With more than 70% of the world’s CO2 emissions generated by cities, the Earth Hour City Challenge has been created to mobilize action and support from cities in the global transition
towards a climate friendly one-planet future.

7 Fun Things To Do During Earth Hour and When The World Goes Dark!

As a family, we have always tried to make significant changes to lessen our carbon footprint but, we’ve also made many small changes that add up. All you have to do is start small and you’re on your way to changing the world.

You can start by unplugging, not just from technology but, appliances like stoves, toasters and computers are responsible for 64.7 percent of the  electricity used in homes. Fridges used 14 percent of all electricity,  which is more than any other appliance alone. Lights were second in total electricity used, they use 9 percent of all electricity in homes.

1. Lights Out and Let The Fun Begin!

Bust out your favorite candles and get ready to be in the dark. No need to be scared, it’s only for an hour after all. Turn off the heat and grab the blankets! This is a great time to catch up, have great conversations with your family and enjoy each other’s company. You’ll be surprised at how fast the hour will go by and you’ve would have done it along with millions across the world.

2. Unplug All Electronics.

This is a chance to unplug electronics and appliances that you seldom use anyway. But, start off with the biggest energy zapping offenders like the TV, the computer and you’d be surprised how many of us forget to unplug your phone chargers when not in use. But, this is the perfect chance to navigate through your home and unplug appliances that you may use just once a day, like the toaster, toaster oven, desk lamps, table lamps and so on. You can unplug them for hour but, you only have to plug those back in as you need them.

3. Put the Games Away and Shut Them Out Completely!

If you examine your normal day to day routine, you will notice that the DVD player and all your gaming systems are plugged in at all times. This is something that becomes convenience when you regularly use these entertainment systems. But, one great solution is to have all of these electronics plugged into a powerbar and you can easily switch it off every night and save energy and CASH. Before long, from the savings, you’ll have enough for that new game you’ve had your eye on.

4. Have a Raw Food Block Party!

Invite over your neighbors and if you’d like, you can ask them to bring their favorite raw food dish. If you aren’t familiar with raw food, that means food that hasn’t used any energy to cook. You can all enjoy light and delicious fare by candlelight and see how dark you can make your entire street. If you haven’t had the chance to get to know your neighbors, this is the perfect time to get to know each other. If you’re so inclined, you can have some eco-friendly, made with sustainably grown grapes to wash it all down!

5. Become a Yogi.

Even it’s for just this hour and in the privacy of your own home. There’s nothing more relaxing than yoga and if you’ve always wanted to try yoga, this is the perfect time to start. Get a mat, research basic poses and have fun. If you’re a seasoned yogi, this is a great chance to focus on that pose that you’ve been trying to master. No interruptions, just you and your breathing, flexing muscles and the mat. You’ll be happy to see how relaxed and limber you are after Earth Hour is over!

6. Pamper Yourself.

Set up your bath with your favorite candles and soak for one glorious hour. If you your fingers and piggies can withstand the forthcoming pruny-ness! Close your eyes, relax or read by candlelight  Use your favorite bath bomb or Epsom salts and just take time to unwind from the busy bustle of life. Your body will thank you.

7. Switch it “OFF” and Unplug.

This one is for my fellow bloggers or those with websites that you can edit yourselves. I stumbled upon this and thought it was really neat, you can allow your readers to “UNPLUG” for Earth Hour by adding this little script to your site. It will be a hanging and shaking little plug on the right side of your screen and your readers can choose whether they want to pull it.  You can head over to WWF’s UK site for the script, here.

Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Australia in 2007. That year, more than 2.2 million people and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. In 2008, the rest of the world – including Canada – joined Earth Hour.

  4. I know it's over now, but nonetheless these are some great tips. Thanks! I try with the kids to remind them often of conserving water and energy etc. It is a constant goal we strive for here. I also try to unplug and very often remind them also to conserve water. I like the idea of doing more yoga together.
