Tips for Planning a Road Trip: How to Stay Safe on the Road
Tips for Planning a Road Trip
American road trips are back on-trend with road trips spanning 250 miles+ 35% more popular in 2021 than the year prior.
Road trips are a great way to explore the country on your own terms without spending a lot of money.
If you’re planning a road trip, it’s important to prioritize safety to avoid unwanted or dangerous situations and have the best and safest time possible.
Avoid Drowsy Driving
While it may be tempting to stay on the road for long periods at a time— it’s vital to avoid drowsy driving. Even if you’re mindful of staying on schedule or simply excited to get to your final destination.
Drowsy driving is similar to drunk driving.
If you stay awake for 18 hours continuously, it’s similar to having a blood-alcohol level of .05 (.08 is considered drunk).
If you stay awake for 24 hours, it’s like you have a blood-alcohol level of .10. So, be sure you’re well-rested before the trip. Try to drive during normal waking hours, and schedule regular breaks every two hours.
Plan Your Route in Advance
Before setting off on your trip, it’s useful to map your route in advance. So, think about the stops you want to make. Be sure to include gas stations as well as landmarks and attractions.
Try to check for any possible closures that may require a plan B. It’s also best to avoid driving on particularly dangerous highways if possible.
Texas, for example, is home to more lane miles than all U.S. states and therefore some of the most deadliest roads. If you do need to travel on a dangerous road, drive carefully and within the speed limits.
Pack an Emergency Kit
Packing an emergency kit will ensure you have everything you need in an unexpected situation. Therefore, it can give you peace of mind on the road.
An emergency kit should include a first-aid kit, tool kit, flashlight with batteries, blankets, jumper cables, and a car charger. Also, don’t forget plenty of drinking water and snacks.
