Iridescence

One of the best things about getting away and staying at Motorcity Casino hotel is their many food options. One thing that we love to do as a couple is to try new restaurants and savor different flavors. Michigan has a lot to offer when it comes to food but, there is a lustrous oasis at the top of the city.

Firstly, they are the ONLY 4-diamond restaurant in Detroit and it’s not even 5 minutes from the Canadian border.

Secondly, Iridescence is located at the top of the hotel and Modern American cuisine is served.

Your meal is complemented by breathtaking city views and twinkling lights at night. If you enjoy a glass of wine with your meal, they have a Wine Spectator Award-winning wine list.

Cocktails and Appetizers

We started off our romantic evening with some cocktails and amazing appetizers. I ordered a piña colada and Dara ordered a beer. I chose a Caesar salad to start and it did not disappoint. What makes it unique is the polenta croutons.

The baby hearts of romaine are perfection and the sharpness of the Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and creaminess of the dressing made it an excellent salad. Crispy, creamy and flavorful.

Dara ordered the Hoisin- and Cab-Braised Short Rib and doesn’t it look amazing? It has a fresh and sweet burst from the vanilla-ginger sweet potatoes and a nutty nuance with the walnuts. The ribs and scallops were cooked to perfection and the crunch of the edamame gave it a fresh touch.

The sous-chef sent us a gift of spicy ahi tuna tartare on a crispy baguette. It was absolutely spectacular. Creamy, fresh and with a small but, lasting spicy kick.

The Charcuterie Board

Whenever we venture to new restaurants, we always enjoy trying their charcuterie board. Chef Rutkowski sent over their board and it was amazing. It was stocked with smoked lamb prosciutto, foie gras, pickled veggies, sugar-cured Tuscan fennel sausage, violet mustard, cornichons and toasted baguettes.

We had so much and still had some left over.

The foie gras with the violet mustard and pickled tomato was incredible and our favorite.

Quite frankly, it was all delicious!

Meeting the Sous-Chef

The ambiance in Iridescence is intimate, yet lively. The colors are true to its name and while the venue is on the smaller side, they maximize the space beautifully. As you look up from your table, you can see the twinkling lights of Detroit and the arches of the Ambassador Bridge in the distance.

The light sets the mood and the service was incredible from the moment we set foot inside.

Our server explained each dish, gave recommendations and was prompt and attentive.

We had the pleasure to meet our sous-Chef for the night, Daniel Rutkowski. He asked us how our meal was and if we’ve enjoyed everything thus far and of course, we definitely had. His kitchen runs smoothly and each dish was served and plated impeccably.

The Main Event

For the beef connoisseur, Iridescence has a delectable selection. Chef Rutkowski states that they age their prime 24 oz Ribeye for 21-days and their 12 oz New York Strip for 28-days in-house. They also offer roasted chicken, lamb chops, lobster, shrimp, crab legs and scallops to name a few.

I chose the Niman Ranch Filet Mignon, a 9-oz filet from Niman Ranch, a producer of all-natural, humanely raised beef. The steak is lean, tender and bursting with flavor. Served with Robuchon potatoes, lemon herb butter, grilled asparagus salad, red wine demi and mushroom powder.

It was the perfect dish.

Cutting a piece of steak and sampling the demi, a touch of mushroom powder and the potatoes was exhilarating. The crunch of the asparagus gave the meal the right amount of texture and balance.

Dara ordered the Chateaubriand, which was a unique dish. A perfectly grilled 6 oz grilled Niman Ranch filet with Rossini sauce, melted leeks and a lobster potato cannoli.

The lobster roll was crispy on the outside and the inside was filled with a lobster mash.

Creamy and chunky with large pieces of lobster throughout. The dish had a touch of sweetness with the leeks and great texture.

The beef filet simply melted in your mouth. Perfection.

A Sweet Ending

As if our meals weren’t amazing as they were, there was still dessert. We ordered cappuccinos and the recommended desserts to share. The Milky Way is not only impressive to look at but, it is packed with so many titillating flavors. It is a chocolate cone with praline mousse. Served with a shot of Baileys inside a chocolate shot glass, raspberries, vanilla bean white chocolate, caramel and espresso. The mousse was pure decadence!

The Milk Chocolate Creme Brûlée with mixed berries was impeccable. Perfectly caramelized on top and when you took your spoon to scoop, milk chocolate poured out slowly. Combined with the sweetness and tart of the berries, it was the perfect ending to a great meal.

But wait, there’s more! The chef sent two of his deliciously moist chocolate macaroons. How he knew that I simply adore them, I don’t know! But, they were drizzled with chocolate, soft, chewy and moist at the bottom.

Tantalized

Above all, our meal was spectacular. As we started to make our way out, we were able to see a small section of their wine selection and their rotating belt. We were shown out by Chef Rutkowski who asked us how our experience was in which we responded, with the answer of absolute perfection.
