Philips Dare to Bare Blogger Challenge: I am Smooth, Silky and Hair-Free and Loving It! #PhilipsDaretoBare
Philips Dare to Bare Blogger Challenge!
I did it!
As many of you know, I took part in the #PhilipsDareToBare Blogger Challenge. It was a month long trial of the Philips SatinPerfect Epilator and the Philips Bikini Genie. I was 1 out of 10 bloggers to take this challenge and I took an extra few days to get my last cycle in. In total, I used the epilator two times and the last time was for good measure and to keep my legs and bikini area smooth for the coming fall weeks. I also tried it wet and dry to see the difference.
Beauty is Pain.
That saying makes me chuckle but, honestly–it does hold a bit of truth. I had the chance to take the Philips SatinPerfect epilator with me for the 3 weeks that I was in Florida this past month. It was perfect, well, because I wanted to be hair-free in both my legs and bikini area. Now, if you’ve never used an epilator, Philips recommends that you take an Ibuprofen to help reduce any swelling, if you’re prone to it.
Philips SatinSoft Epilator product features include:
- Hypoallergenic discs (silver-ion discs) and washable head to maximize skin hygiene
- Corded
- Two speed settings for gentle and extra efficient epilation
- Massage attachment for a pleasant epilation process
- Sensitive area cap specifically adapted for delicate areas
- Storage pouch
- Exfoliation brush – unique Philips design with Hypoallergenic bristles
- Retails for: $69.99
Ready, Set, Go!
When I tried the epilator, I have to admit that it’s a bit painful. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain and I was able to withstand the feeling and to be quite honest, I didn’t mind the sensation. I am prone to in-grown hairs in my legs so I have gotten used to plucking them out if I needed. Also, I am used to waxing so I think that helps the tolerance.
My legs were a really bright red when I finished the first session and I did ice them a bit afterwards. The redness faded and then I was able to see my results and I was impressed! I tried doing it both wet and dry and I while it works doing both, I must say I prefer doing it wet so that there’s some traction.
While some may find the epilator pretty intense, I was brave enough to try it on my under arms and though that was a bit more intense because of the area, I did it and I am happy to say that I resulted in smooth underarms that I didn’t have to shave every time I showered.
Tips and Tricks:
When you are new to epilation, the first few sessions might be a little uncomfortable. To reduce this, try epilating when you’re relaxed, and avoid stimulants like coffee. I found the best time to do it was towards the evening, that way when you wake up the next day, your legs are smooth and ready to be shown off!
Plus, there’s an opti-light built-in so that you can get every hair.
- Go against the flow: Make gentle upward strokes against the hair growth direction, starting at a lower speed if you’re feeling sensitive.
- Open up: Good news – epilating gets less and less painful over time. To make hair removal easier, first take a bath or shower to open the skin pores.
- Find the Length: Epilate on hair that at least has 1 or 2 days growth.
- Peas keep cool: After epilating, sooth your skin by cooling it with a bag of frozen peas.
- Scrub-a-dub: Exfoliating smooths the skin and helps prevent ingrown hairs. Exfoliate between sessions, but give it a rest for a few days after epilating.
It took me about an hour and a half the first time to fully epilate my legs and about 30 minutes to do my underarms. It’s a process but, it’s worth it because you don’t have to worry about hair removal for about 2 weeks. I found that with some areas, I had to go over the same spot to fully remove the hairs.
It also comes with a shaving head in the case that you want to use it to shave instead of finishing the epilating process. I haven’t used this yet but, I love that it has that option.
The Philips Bikini Genie Trimmer.
Now this trimmer is so simple to use and I loved the results. It was perfect for travel because of it’s compact size and that it’s battery-operated too. Being at a swimming pool and different beaches is definitely nothing to complain about and this little number accompanied me to Florida and the Bahamas. All while keeping me smooth and comfortable for my whole vacation.
It’s Ergonomic handle is specifically designed for the bikini area and makes it easy to trim the hard to reach areas. Cleaning was quick and easy! All you need to do is just remove the head and give it a wash. Not to mention, it retails for $19.99 and that is super affordable! Philips also recommends that you keep the trimmer as dry as possible to prolong it’s use.
The Philips BikiniGenie is designed to enchant. Its petite, fun design and playful colour makes it perfect for use at home or at the beach. No fuss, no hassle, just flick the on/off switch at the side of the device to get started. Simply place the trimming head onto the hair you want to remove and glide it against the direction of your hair growth. For best results, keep skin taut while trimming.
Pesky Hair?
Bring it ON!
I am excited to say that now that I have tried epilation and the Philips SatinPerfect epilator and Philips Bikini Genie, I can say that they will have a permanent place in beauty regimen. Also, I know that I can skip the painful and expensive waxing in the salon when I can do it at home with my trimmer.
What I love the most about the Philips SatinPerfect epilator is that it’s going to help me with the little pesky in-grown hairs that I get. Since, essentially, it pulls the hairs from the roots and I can say bumps be gone!
For those wondering about epilation, let me tell you, it isn’t a pleasant feeling but, it surely isn’t something that your body can’t handle or get used to over time. You can always start really slow and believe me, after you see that you get great results and you’re saving money.
You’ll love it!
Would you ever consider epilation, why or why not?
Let me know, til then–cheers m’deres!

I would LOVE to try this. Having 5 kids, I am lucky if I have enough time to shave quick in the shower, thankfully I have a very understanding husband!
Works well, considering you\’ll be hair free longer and won\’t have to shave all the time!

That's great to know! I'm a little afraid though – while I can stand a lot of pain I'd really rather not put myself through any more than I face daily as it is.

Hehe, that\’s a great way to put it. I think you get used it and it get easier. 🙂
I would love to try one out but I am such a chicken. I would have to suck it up and just do it, quickly and while holding my breath.
LOL, that\’s how I started! 🙂
I'd be interested to try it, but epilating sounds so painful!
Waxing is painful too, but we get used to it I think. LOL. But, with this epilator you can epilate or shave too. 🙂
great review Nancy, I totally chicken out when it comes to pain too, but it sounds like the results were worth it. maybe I'll have to give it a try lol
They definitely are Jen, you should. Start off slow and build up to it!
I have one of these and I LOVE it! Great post!
Thanks Kelly, I fell in love too!
I have always wanted to try this. Thanks for the information.
You\’re very welcome, let me know if you try it!
My sister swears that an epilator is the way to go but I'm not strong when it comes to bearing pain!
She\’s right, I\’m totally converted. I don\’t mind the quickness of a razor but, with this epilator, you have both choices too.
Yes! I would love to give it a try. Your post has inspired me to find out more about the Philips epilator! I am glad it helped make your holiday carefree.

Give it a try Pam, it can be intimidating but once you get going, you got it!
Totally agree, it's better when wet! I think it helps heating the skin with water to loosen the pores or whatever it is that holds hair in place, lol. And I actually prefer using an epilator for underarms instead of a razor. Razors freak me out in that region for some reason, lol.
My recent post What’s the Issue? Let’s talk about fashion, Melissa McCarthy and ELLE
I know exactly what you\’re saying and I agree, razors in the underarm area is eeek… I think because it\’s so sensitive. 🙂
what a wonderful review; I haven't tried an epilator, and am a little hesitant because I do NOT have a high pain threshold
You totally should, it\’s so worth it!
I'm not sure I'd dare use an epilator, but I enjoyed your review. I'm losing weight and my reward when I reach my goal is going to be laser hair removal. 🙂
Hi Nancy, epilating does get better the more you do it. It is those first couple of sessions that you have to grit your teeth through. While the underarms are very painful, I like that they look brighter and cleaner than shaving. With shaving there is a dark stubble.
Thanks for the insight!
