Design a Functional Home Office in a Small Space

With so many working from home these days, having a functional home office space is essential.

Unfortunately, many of us do not have enough space to dedicate an entire room to a home office. The good news is that there are many ways you can create a dedicated workspace in your home.

All you need is a little bit of creativity!

Take Advantage of Vertical Space

Though your square footage may be rather low, you can make up for it by taking advantage of your empty walls.

Bulletin boards can be used to attach calendars, post-it notes, and other paper-based reminders. While pegboards are great for hanging heavier items such as clipboards and office supplies.

Floating wall shelves are a modern way to create storage space for heavy books and journals and take up much less space than a bookcase.

To make your workspace look less out of place in a communal area of the house, place decorative objects and plants on some of the shelves to seamlessly blend your workbooks with the decor.

You can also mix art prints with your calendars and notes to stylishly integrate work with home while still having a clearly defined office.

Use Multi-Functional Furniture

To make your small space work for you, avoid big, bulky furniture that only serves a single purpose.

Your bureau can open up to provide a shelf for your laptop. That dressing table you only use first thing in the morning while you get ready can double as a desk.

A folding desk chair is also a great space-saving option. Simply fold it up and place it in the closet when you’re done for the day.

Fill Under-Utilized Space

Regardless of the size of the home, everyone has an under-utilized area in their house. Adding a small workspace is one of several ways to style the most neglected area in your home.

Negative spaces that have the potential to be transformed include:

  • Alcoves. Measure the space and shop around for a shallow desk to match the empty area. For the perfect fit, construct a floating alcove desk yourself.
  • Stairways. As bleak as Harry Potter’s bedroom in the cupboard under the stairs was, this area is a great place to put a desk. If you have a space like this, you’re likely already using it for storage. Simply add a desk that offers storage and some shelves, and you’ll have a space that is twice as functional as it was before.
  • Partition and feature walls. A thick wall that functions only to divide two spaces in your home can become a great space for a small, compact desk.

Move from Paper to Digital

In today’s day and age, virtually everyone requires technology for at least some components of their job.

Using a combination of paper and digital productivity tools can actually make you less organized by interrupting your workflow each time you move between mediums.

Additionally, paper products require physical storage space that you might not have. Instead of looking for space for that ugly filing cabinet, move most – if not all – of your tools online.

Notion is an all-in-one workspace where you can work collaboratively on projects with colleagues, take notes, and schedule your day.

It’s so customizable and easy to use, you won’t even feel the loss of your regular pen and paper.
