How to Make a Small Living Room Feel Spacious
How to Make a Small Living Room Feel Spacious
If your small lounge needs an overhaul, you need to be a bit more methodical about it than you would be if you weren’t short on space.
It isn’t as simple as buying furniture just because you like it because the reality is it might not look right and, even worse, it might not fit.
It’s also wise to be cautious when decorating, or you could make the room look even smaller than it already is.
Here are 4 things to consider when giving your small lounge a makeover.
Decorating
There are loads of wallpapers on the market these days, and a wide range of paint colors too.
So you have many different options.
Just be mindful that anything too busy or too dark could make your space seem even less spacious. It doesn’t mean you can’t add color – but try and keep it to an accent wall.
Painting the other walls in lighter tones will help create a bright, airy, and welcoming feel.
If done correctly, could make your room feel far more spacious.
Seating
Seating is always a tricky one when it comes to small spaces. It’s worth doing lots of measuring and giving it a ton of thought before you go ahead and purchase something.
Sectionals for small spaces are perfect as they can be configured to suit the size and shape of your room.
Plus, they still offer a very stylish appeal.
Accent chairs are another great choice and are a great way to add a bit of a wow factor to any room.
A great way to check how a sofa will look in your room in terms of size is to mark out the dimensions with tape so you can see the footprint.
Another option (if you have the time and inclination) is to use cardboard boxes to mimic the style and shape of the sofa that you have your eye on.
Flooring
There are many types of flooring to choose from. If you are looking for something that will help create the illusion of space, you can’t go wrong with laminate or vinyl.
Both come in a host of different colors and effects and will make any room feel lighter, brighter, and more spacious.
Couple with a rug, and you can create a lounge that’s bursting with appeal.
If carpet is your preference, adopt the principles we referred to earlier and use lighter colors.
Storage
Storage is typically always a problem in a small room, so what better way to create more than being clever with your furniture choices.
For example, if purchasing a footstool, buy one you can store things inside.
If you have your eyes on a new TV stand, opt for one with drawers, doors, or shelving that you can display ornaments and other knick-knacks on.
