3 Benefits Of Regular HVAC System Maintenance

HVAC system, what? I know that we don’t often think about our HVAC systems. In fact, for the first year or so of being a homeowner, I sure didn’t. But now, it’s something that is on my regular maintenance to-do list.

We depend on our HVAC systems to keep us comfortable all year round. It’s easy to take them for granted until something goes wrong.

Research has shown that a neglected unit has to work up to 20 percent harder than a well-maintained one to keep us comfortable.

Poorly maintained units waste both energy and money. Investing in regular maintenance has numerous benefits, from increasing your comfort and safety to boosting your bank account.

1. Health And Safety

We don’t often think of our home when we hear the word pollution. However, according to the EPA, the air we breathe indoors can be up to five times more polluted than outside.

Our homes are hosts to numerous airborne allergens, from pet dander, dust, and mites. Right down to volatile organic compounds and other toxins found in most everyday household cleaning products.

A well-maintained HVAC system is basically an air filtration system for your entire home. It can improve your indoor air quality significantly.

A neglected system, on the other hand, can harbour dirt, mold, and other harmful bacteria that can lead to or worsen respiratory or neurological issues.

Scheduled inspections, documentation, and necessary repairs will help ensure that the air you’re breathing is as clean as possible.

2. Big Savings

Think of your HVAC system like a car. Regular tune-ups, filter changes, diagnostics, and small repairs will cut down on your risk of expensive breakdowns and emergency repairs.

While there are things you can do on your own, to save money and keep your system running at its best, having it maintained by professionals will save you big money in the long run.

Seasonal service doesn’t come close to the thousands it will cost to replace the whole system in the case that it fails. In fact, preventative maintenance reduces your chances of costly fixes by up to 95 percent.

In addition to saving you future money avoiding hefty repairs, a properly maintained HVAC unit runs at a higher level of efficiency and doesn’t expend as much energy as a neglected one while it’s working.

Heating and cooling your home accounts for up to 40 percent of your energy costs, and can be reduced by up to 15 percent by simply keeping it running smoothly.

3. The Environment

Most of us are at least somewhat concerned with our environmental footprint. An HVAC system that’s properly maintained uses less fuel to operate, which is good for the planet.

Your HVAC technician can also determine what type of refrigerant your system uses, as well as its environmental impact and whether there are more eco-friendly options for your system.

Possibly one of the most effective things you can do to prevent harmful gasses from being released into the atmosphere is to maintain your own HVAC system.
