Stay Healthy this Winter with these Winter Wellness Essentials

Winter is one of the toughest seasons when it comes to health and beauty. With spending more time indoors, colder temps, little sun and dry air, it’s no surprise that it can all wreak havoc on your body. Especially your skin, hair, nails, and even from the inside out.

It’s a good idea to adapt your routine for winter. You may not notice the effects right away but, after a few weeks, you may notice that you are dragging and feeling out of sorts. That is why I count on iHerb for my winter wellness essentials.

Dry and drab skin, limp hair and chapped lips can really do a number on you. Not to mention that the lack of sun can leave you lacking in essential Vitamin D.

Then there’s cold season.

If you’re like me, you want to try to prevent getting a cold as much as possible. Particularly if you’re a parent and have a family. It can be hard to get ahead of the downsides of winter, especially when you’re always on the go. Here’s the thing, it’s not impossible.

Read on for my favourite winter wellness essentials and tips that will help you stay healthy and glowing this winter season!

Moisturizing Shea Butter & Sweet Almond soap by Mild by Nature with other skin essentials.

1. Exfoliate and Use Moisturizing Cleansers

Normally, bar soaps tend to dry out your skin. Unless you have a bar soap that is infused with moisturizing agents. Like Mild by Nature, Moisturizing Bar Soap, in Shea Butter & Sweet Almond. It is amazing. This soap is made from goat’s milk and is abundant in skin nourishing botanicals. Plus, it’s cruelty-free and palm oil sustainably sourced. Which to me, means feeling good inside and out.

TIP: Bathe or shower using warm to cool water. Winter is cold but, hot water can dry out your skin even more.

Don’t forget to use your favourite loofah to help slough away dead skin cells. I just wet the bar soap and rub it onto my loofah and away I go. Use a pumice stone to keep your feet nice and smooth. This bar soap is great for shaving as well, so lather up and get those smooth legs.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

It goes without saying, moisturizing is absolutely essential to have beautiful and glowing skin. The kind of skin that retains its youthful appearance. I am religious when it comes to moisturizing and while I have my favourites, I love trying new products that have ingredients that will hydrate my skin.

During the winter, moisturizing is even MORE important since we are spending more time indoors with dry air. I have made it my mission to teach my girls the importance of moisturizing. Especially my teen, who is very meticulous on skin care.

We have both enjoyed using Mild by Nature, Camellia Care, Green Tea Facial Cream. It isn’t oily and smells great. Both my daughter and I suffer from dry skin, especially in the face and I have to say, we are quite impressed at how it leaves our skin. Give this moisturizer a try, it is definitely a great pick for an everyday moisturizer.

It comes with a concentrated source of EGCg from Camellia sinensis (Green Tea), plus Resveratrol and Hyaluronic Acid. The Hyaluronic Acid is something I look for in moisturizers because it truly hydrates dry skin.

3. Protect Your Skin from UV Rays

What the what? You may be wondering why I am making this suggestion in the winter. Well, even though it may be cold, grey, and dreary outside, the UV rays still come through. If you don’t protect your skin from these harmful rays, you are open to lasting detrimental effects. A good way to make sure you have SPF coverage is to use a moisturizer that contains it.

TIP: Use Azelique Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum with SPF 20.

I cleanse and tone with my current faves and moisturize my face with Camellia Care Green Tea Moisturizer. Then I move on to Azelique Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum with SPF 20. I like that it’s lightweight and great to provide coverage quickly and evenly and without the harsh chemicals of many other products.

Imagine softening the skin on your face with natural products that include avocado, coconut, and sesame seed oil, while preventing sun damage at the same time. Not to mention, it comes in 4 different shades and gives you a warm glow. Both Gabby and I have loved it and have been sharing it. We both use Tan-Deep and it covers so well while being moisturizing.

4. Nourish that Kisser

One of my biggest complaints is having chapped lips during the winter. The harsh wind and air can leave you chapped and dry in no time. Poor Mimi is really prone to chapped lips and I always have to remind her to have chapstick on her at all times.

We solved our chapped lip problem by being proactive and with our favorite Sierra Bees Organic Lip Balms. These lip balms are available in fun flavours including cocoa butter, pomegranate, shea butter with argan oil, mint burst, honey, tamanu with tea tree, crème brulee, and a basic unflavored option.

TIP: Pick up the variety 8-pack, that way you can give one to everyone in the family. My fave is the mint burst and honey.

The beeswax that is used meets very stringent requirements, so you will not need to worry about the quality being poor with these lip balms. Instead, they will leave your lips silky smooth for hours at a time. Make sure to use them often and before you head out into the blistering cold.

5. Up Your Vitamins

I am a stickler when it comes to prevention during cold/flu season. Since birth, our kids know to cover their mouths, wash their hands often, and sanitize. Another way to up defenses during this time is to increase your Vitamin C.

Don’t forget what happened to pirates in the old days. Scurvy! While these days we aren’t stuck on ships and get Vitamin C in our food, it has never failed us to up our Vitamin C intake. An easy way to do that is with California Gold Nutrition, Vitamin C Gummies.

TIP: Opt for CGN Organics gummies, they’re gelatin and gluten-free and great for adults and children.

Not only do you get all the Vitamin C you need, but they’re also yummy too. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that supports immune health, skin and connective tissue as well as antioxidant protection.

Lack of sunshine during the winter months can leave you low on Vitamin D. Use California Gold Nutrition Vitamin D3 gummies. Vitamin D3 is the body’s preferred form of Vitamin D. It is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. You need it for many metabolic processes in the body. It helps regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and supports normal immune system function.

Believe me, you won’t have a hard time getting your kids to take these vitamins. They really do taste good and not medicine-y.

6. Enjoy Java with a Healthy Boost

One thing that I do not go without is my cup of coffee. While I don’t over do it, I like to have a cup every day. Sometimes more but, I make sure I have one cup that will help me from the inside out. The older that I get, the more help my skin and body needs.

CaféCeps is a premium, certified organic 3-in-1 instant coffee beverage, containing a full -spectrum blend of cordyceps and reishi mushrooms. Both Darasak and I have our morning coffee and we made it nice and creamy with the California Gold Nutrition Coconut Collagen Creamer.

It is a delicious creamer that can be added to your daily cup of joe to boost the building blocks that your hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints need each day.

TIP: Add some raw brown sugar or stevia if you need a little sweetness.

While we love this iHerb product in our morning cup of coffee, it also tastes amazingly delish in our smoothies!

The best part is that there are no added flavors or sweeteners in this creamer, so you will know that you are only consuming exactly what your body needs.

7. Don’t Skip Breakfast

It’s inevitable that winter brings storms. That often means your regular routine gets interrupted and often times, it’s our breakfast that gets nixed.

Plus, mornings are always so rushed, which is why you may have been tempted to skip out on breakfast a time or two. Well, that one missed meal can cause numerous problems for you the rest of the day and in the future. After all, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

I’m a habitual breakfast skipper and I have no excuse now with California Gold Nutrition Whey Protein Isolate mix. I chose dark chocolate to get my antioxidants in at the same time.

It’s simple, I just add two scoops of the mix into water or any type of milk and then shake to blend. I notice that I don’t feel the usual morning blahs. It keeps me satiated enough to power through my morning until lunch.

Darasak uses it as a pre-workout when he works out or directly after his session. It helps repair muscle damage and eliminates soreness. It will keep you going through these tough winter months when we need that boost the most.

8. Take Care of Your Skin from the Inside Out

I’ll be real here. My skin is not what it used to be. Long gone are the days where my skin was supple, taut, and well, young. Collagen is the primary structural protein found in joints, bones, skin, hair, nails and other connective tissues. It is responsible for maintaining the strength and elasticity/flexibility of these tissues found throughout the body.

Since I’ve gone up and down in weight and have had children, the integrity of my skin is not what it used to be. I decided to try out California Gold Nutrition Collagen UP to give my body a little TLC all while getting in a glass of water.

Even though it’s marine-sourced, it’s not fishy at all. To me, that’s a HUGE bonus. It’s a perfect way to supplement what my body is lacking and with the harsh winter, it’s nice to have a little help from the inside.
