Cake Mix S’mores Donuts

With summer here, all I can think about is the great outdoors and all the good things that come with it like– a campfire favourite, s’mores!

If there is one thing that we know a lot about, it’s donuts. In fact, when we travel, we make it a point to find a local donut place to try exciting new flavours and toppings.

You may not think that you can make donuts at home but, I’m here to tell you, you totally can.

Not only are they simple to make, you can either make them from scratch or use a cake mix to cut down some time.

Read on for the step-by-step instructions to make these scrumptious Cake Mix S’mores Donuts and you can bring in the taste of this classic campfire treat–indoors!

ingredients:

  • box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

For Frosting:

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter – cut into chunks
  • 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3-4 cups crushed Malt o’ Meal Smores cereal*

*If you don’t have this cereal available, use Post Honeymaid S’mores or you can make your own mix by using Golden Grahams, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips.

prepare the mix

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a donut pan with non stick spray. In a large bowl, add the cake mix, egg, vegetable oil and water and mix until well combined.

bake them

Using either a large Ziploc bag with the tip cut off or a piping bag, fill the bag with your batter and fill the donut pan wells about 1/2 way.

These will rise a lot so be sure not to fill too high.

Bake for 12-14 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.

Let Them Cool

Let the pan cool for about 10 minutes before removing the donuts. Carefully remove them from the pan and allow the donuts to cool completely. The longer you let them cool the more stable the donuts will be for dipping.

Prepare the frosting

Using the double broiler method on the stove top, melt the butter, chocolate chips and sugar until a nice creamy texture has been reached.

Dip each donut into the chocolate frosting and then immediately into a bowl of crushed smores cereal. Allow the donuts to sit and harden up a little bit. Enjoy!

Make sure you let them cool for 10 minutes. You can mix these up with your fave toppings. If you can't find this specific cereal, you can use crushed up graham crackers and mini marshmallows.
