How to Know When To Say ‘Yes’ To Your Dream Home

Finding your dream home is something that we all think about. One minute you’re on a house search that feels like it’s never going to end. After looking at small, unimpressive homes that just don’t fulfil your needs, and then you walk into somewhere that you’ve only ever dreamed of.

Before you eagerly hand over your money, you need to think a few things through.

We’ve noted down some of the questions that you should ask yourself if you’re in that situation.

Is it suitable for your forever home?

When you buy a house, you need to think about your needs in the long-run, as well as your needs right now. Sure, you may not need the extra bedroom at the current point in time, but have you thought about any future possibilities of expanding your family?

It can seem like a strange thing to consider, but you’ll be heartbroken if you have to move out when you’ve found a house that you love in all other ways.

Will It Age Well?

Another thing to think about that may sway your decision is whether your potential home will age well. If it’s of a particular style, you need to think this through.

You could end up losing out on cash if it falls out of fashion.

A classic, timeless design is what usually retains its value. Consider that style if you want to ensure that you’re investing in something that you’ll get your money back from, should you come to sell.

Is It Close to the Basic Amenities?

Before you say ‘yes’ to any home, you need to think about how close it is to a variety of things. How long would it take you to drive to a doctor or a hospital? Where are the nearest stores?

What are the schools like nearby, and how easy is it to travel to them? What are the transport links like?

These are all things that should be considered in-depth, as they could cause inconvenience at a later date.

Are There Any Issues Below the Surface?

When you first enter a house or apartment, you’re always looking at the aesthetics, the space that is on offer, and what it could be used for.

These are all valuable things to consider, but take some time to look deeper.

Can you see or smell any signs of damp, and are there any cracks in the walls? Whilst it may not actually be an issue, get these checked out by a professional before you buy.

It’s always a safe bet to get an inspector to give you a full report. That way, you know what you can handle and what you cannot.

What are the Water and Heating Like?

Another thing that could be a huge cost to you is changing up the water and heating. Getting a new boiler can be pricey. Check these things over, and get a professional to confirm that they don’t need replacing.

If the water pressure seems poor or there are any other issues here, then get some quotes from local plumbers. See how much you’re actually going to have to pay out in order to put it right.

Are the Neighbours Friendly?

Speaking to the current owners of the home about their experiences with the neighbours is also a vital thing to do.

If you find that they’re loud, rowdy, or just strange, then it could make you feel a little uneasy when you’re leaving or entering, your own home.

Introduce yourself to them if you have the opportunity. You should be able to tell whether they’re going to be good people to live next door to!

Have you Sought Professional Advice?

It is absolutely vital that you seek out professional advice, and get a survey done of the entire property before you purchase it. There are many things that can be lurking beneath the surface, and if you don’t find out about them until afterwards, then it can be a pretty nasty surprise. Find out what surveys you can get done, and make sure that you sort out all of this before you move in.

Did you check the exterior?

The exterior of a home is just as important as the interior, and it’s something that you need to check over. Find out when the roof was done, and whether it’s in need of any repair work.

Again, it’s a good idea to bring a professional in if you want to find out the ins and outs of everything.
