How to Move Abroad With No Job or Money

Have you ever felt like you want to give it all up and move abroad? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone.

Many people have this feeling from time to time – the grass is always greener on the other side. But unfortunately, not everyone has the means to do so.

Moving abroad requires a lot of preparation and, more importantly, money. That is often the biggest obstacle as it is now common knowledge that relocation costs a fortune.

However, it doesn’t have to be the case.

Indeed, having a spare sum would make it much easier, but you can still move abroad if you are on a tight budget or completely broke. As long as you plan it carefully and are ready for a few sacrifices.

First, decide what you want to accomplish with your move. Then, look for job opportunities, sell everything you won’t need, cut down on expenses, and try to make friends with locals who might help you get by.

If you are still not convinced, here are some tips to help you successfully move abroad with no money or a job.

Do Your Research

Before you get on a plane or a train, it is essential to find out as much as possible about the country you are considering moving to.

The best way to do this is to visit the country in question, even if it is only for a few days.

The more time you spend there, the better idea you will have about whether or not it is right for you.

Do some research on the cost of living and compare it to your home country. While it is easy to get carried away by the exotic appeal of a new place, you have to be realistic and ask yourself if you really can build a life there.

Moreover, you should find out what you will need to live there legally, e.g., a visa, a work permit, or a residence card.

Find a Job

The most common reason why people move abroad is to get a better-paying job. So, if you’re looking to move with no money, you need to start by researching the local job market.

Go online to browse ads or contact a recruitment agency to get support. You may even be able to find something remotely and start before you leave.

If you don’t aim for high-paying white-collar jobs, you can still find attractive offers in the hospitality industry and other service-oriented sectors.

It’s easier if you know the language already, but all is not lost yet, even if you don’t.

You can always look for something that doesn’t require any specific language skills. Then, there are also side gigs and freelancing opportunities.

You may rent a car for rideshare and delivery services or become an online tutor or a virtual assistant. Think about what you enjoy or are good at and try to monetize it.

Sell Your Belongings

Whenever you plan to move, but especially if you move abroad, you should try to reduce the number of items to take with you. It will not only lower the cost of moving but also make it easier to set up your new home.

You may be reluctant to part with your stuff, but you really don’t need it all. You can sell some of your things to make extra cash for your move.

You can also take a look at the ads or ask around for a second-hand dealer. You can plan when they can come and collect on a specific date.

If you have many things to sell, you can also opt for an online auction or a garage sale. Additionally, you may ask friends and family members if they need anything or post an ad on social media.

Another option is to donate to charity instead; you may be able to get a tax exemption or a receipt.

Cut Down on Expenses

In the months leading up to your move, you should start cutting down your expenses. That way, you can save some money.

Evaluate your spending habits and differentiate between the ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. That way, you can eliminate as many of the latter as possible.

For example, you can cook at home more often instead of eating out. Cancel your cable subscription, and switch to a cheaper cell phone plan.

Then, you should also do your research to minimize the cost of moving abroad. For example, you can check if there are any low-cost airlines operating flights to the country you want to move to.

In addition, before you buy your flight ticket, check if there are other expenses. Like a visa, health insurance, and the cost of living that you might have to take into account.

The sooner you do it, the more time you will have to find better (and cheaper) options.

Make Friends With Locals

One of the best ways to make your move abroad easier and cheaper is to make friends with locals.

They can assist you with the administrative process, show you around, and help you find a job or an apartment.

If you don’t know anyone in your new country, you can make new friends by joining social clubs or volunteering.

You can even look online before your move.

Try to befriend people who, similarly to you, emigrated from your home country. They might be more than willing to help you as they know what you’re going through and how difficult it can be to adjust to a new place.

Once you make new friends, you can ask them for recommendations on places to visit, restaurants to try, and other things to do.

The Bottom Line

Moving abroad is not as complicated or expensive as you might think, especially if you know what you’re doing.

With the right amount of planning and preparation, you can move abroad with no job or a substantial sum of money.

Start by doing your research and gathering some savings. It doesn’t have to be a fortune, really, as any sum would be of help.
