How To Transition Into Retirement When You Don’t Want To Retire

Not everybody dreams of lounging at the beach all day when they retire. Some do not like having the routine of working or feeling important since they don’t have a high position at a job anymore.

Some people really just don’t want to retire.

That may be fine for some people. After all, there are those that have great health, mobility, and mental acuity to continue working long after most people have retired.

Plan on Retirement Regardless

But, since you don’t know what curveballs life can throw at you, it’s best to plan on retirement even if you think that you don’t want to.

If you plan to be active, or continue working, you still need to have things planned out in case things change.

You could fall ill.

You may even lose the job you were hoping to continue. There are a number of variables that can happen all of a sudden so best to make plans and hope for the best. Having a Plan B is essential.

In this article, we will go over some of the ways that you can be ready for anything. Even if you plan to never retire.

Have the Right Housing

It’s everybody’s dream for retirement to not have to rely in assisted living facilities.

However, is your home set up in case you end up with limited mobility? Is your home in a rural area where you have to drive for everything?

There are a few issues with living in your home you’ve been in from before retirement.

One is that slip and fall injuries are some of the most common when people are over 65. These types of injuries are hard to come back from.

Many houses are not set up for older individuals and pose many hazards that can facilitate your injury.

Your best bet is to find a retirement community where you can have full mobility and not give up your independence.

Communities like Trilogy Wickenburg Ranch have houses that allow you to live on your own but have a house that is already fitted out with elderly people in mind.

This way you can avoid a lot of the issues that your old house likely has.

The other benefit to this type of situation is that these communities are like little villages. You have everything you need right nearby.

There are medical facilities right there, social centers, and all the other conveniences that make it easy to get by and still live on your own.

Keep Contributing

You really don’t know how long you will need your retirement benefits to last. You could live to be over 100 and still be in decent health in body and mind.

This means that you should still be making contributions while you are working to ensure that you have enough money to get you through your golden years.

If you are working for a company and have less than 5% ownership of it, then you can continue making contributions to your 401k as long as you continue to work.

There is no cutoff.

You can continue to work and wait until age 70 to collect social security. Even if you continue to work you can receive those benefits.

If you don’t need to use the Social Security payments, then it is a wise idea to put the monthly payments into a fund that will allow that money to grow rather than just putting it in a bank account.

Your Roth IRA can still be active and you can continue to make contributions as well. This all adds up to having a much different number in mind when you were leading up to your retirement.

If you thought you needed X amount of dollars, then working longer will allow you to dramatically reduce that number.

When or if you do decide to stop working, your money should last you quite a long time.

Start a Business

Some jobs may require you to be younger and more physically fit to continue to do them. You could even be forced into retirement by your company.

Especially if they need to make space for somebody else or if you are unable to continue doing the job.

Just because this happens that doesn’t mean that you have to stop working and just lounge around all day.

You have a lifetime of experience and expertise that can be put to use now. Use this experience to start your own business and keep going.

With the added benefit that you are doing it for yourself and your own dreams rather than somebody else’s.

The problem with many people is that it is a race to retire and when it finally happens they get bored and feel depressed.

They feel they don’t have a purpose any longer.

If this sounds like you, then starting a business is a logical next step if you are not ready for the retired life.

Your business can be as big or as small as you want it to be. There is nothing stopping you from doing things big if you want to really throw yourself into something.

It can also be a great thing to pass down to your children or grandchildren to set them up for success after you’re gone if you build it big enough.

Or, your business could simply be creating a job for yourself to keep you busy and give you a purpose in your retirement years.

The best part of this is that it keeps you active which helps you stay healthy. Your mind stays sharp when you have something to focus on and solve problems all day.

Otherwise, you run the risk of dementia if you aren’t using your brain much.

The only thing to be careful about is that it doesn’t take money out of your retirement account to get up and running.

Retirement isn’t for everyone and that’s okay but, you have options!

Do you have any tips on how to transition into retirement when you’re not ready?
